Thanks a Lot - Gratitude Practice in Music Therapy Sessions

November, the month where we are all challenged to think about all of the things we have in our lives to be thankful for. I think that we can all agree that even though the last few years have been quite challenging, and for that it is even more important to “look for the good”, as one of our colleagues urged us all to do earlier this school year.

Keeping that in mind, a specific song comes to the forefront, “Thanks a lot” by Raffi. It is a simple and beautiful song that I like to use in my sessions of all ages. I sing it for everyone as written and then open it up to the room, where they are encouraged to share what they are thankful for. This is a wonderful songwriting opportunity and really helps promote inward reflection. Hearing a room full of thankfulness really gets everyone in the holiday spirit.

So if you find yourself needing to reflect on your blessings, feel free to listen to this awesome song! I have provided the original lyrics as well as a fill in the blank version for your convenience. Just as Bing Crosby did in the classic movie, “White Christmas”. let’s all take a moment to “count our blessings” this holiday season, and beyond.
