The story behind our new Social Emotional app for kids
It’s 11:11 make a wish…
BloomiVerse across the Universe.
It was about two years ago that this popped into my head as I glanced at the time, 11:11. I didn’t exactly know what that meant at the time, but I knew the feeling behind it. Spread as much love, kindness, and acceptance as far as humanly possible. Allow a child thousands of miles away to feel that they belong and are loved, just as they are. But how? How could I possibly spread our message at Bloom far and wide. With technology use running rampant in the hands of children, and new parenting strategies such as “FAFO” replacing the gentle parenting approach (which barely even got off the ground), I was starting to feel helpless. Why are we yelling at our children instead of explaining? Why are we threatening and shaming children? Why are we isolating children to their rooms because they are expressing an emotion? Why are we as parents unable to access our own coping skills? This was a problem I had to solve and it became heavy. Meanwhile the universe kept on nudging me, encouraging me to not abandon hope, until one day (insert whatever ‘granola crunchy’ joke you have here) I had a dream. I saw it all. The golden tree with pink leaves. The characters. The whole neighborhood. I had years of songs that I had written about love, acceptance, diversity, coping skills, emotions, kindness, and everything that I have seen in early childhood that I wanted to solve through music. It all came together and I knew what I had to do. I drew it out very roughly and got to work with my amazing team at BloomiVerse.
Now… technology use in young children has become absurd. Tablets have become babysitters, children learn to swipe instead of turning pages in a book, and many children are not learning the basic social emotional skills needed to interact with peers. This is NOT the “If you can’t beat them join them” moment. This is where I acknowledge that the world has changed. Jobs are no longer 9-5, Monday-Friday. My phone is on me at all times, and opening my mail application is as rote as brushing the hair out of my face throughout the day. It’s non-stop. Although I do not agree with it, there is an expectation in this world that people must be able to reach you at all times. Whether it’s work, your family, or your friends. So while I acknowledge that excessive technology use is not good for children. I also recognize that in most modern families it will happen. Enter BloomiVerse, a safe space online for children (and their caregivers) to learn about emotions, coping skills, diversity and kindness. If you do need to give your young child a tablet or your phone so you can have a conversation with your spouse, or return an email, or even call the doctor (take care of yourself too!), give them BloomiVerse. And, if you can, join them in our world for a bit.
One of the things that I am good at is creating ear worms, a catchy tune that gets stuck in your head. My gift to this world is that I want those ear worms to benefit you and your child. Parenting is usually chaotic, and we all need reminders on how to access our own coping skills. Co-Regulation in parenting is key. You breathe, they breathe. Adding oxygen to both of your brains and allowing you to move forward more effectively. One of my favorite choruses that I wrote is “Restart, and things get better. Restart, and solve the problem. Restart, and things get better. Sometimes, we have to stop and restart”. What a gift, knowing that no matter what has happened in the day so far, we can restart, erase it, and start again.
Our philosophy at Bloom has always been rooted in love and acceptance for all. We hope that you find this app to be a safe space for your child (and you!) to learn about emotions, coping skills, diversity, kindness, and so many more important things that will allow your child to develop emotional maturity as they grow.
Thank you so much for exploring our BloomiVerse world where we always:
Love, Nurture, Grow, and Bloom together.
