Everybody makes mistakes… and everybody has those days! Sound familiar? Well, it’s true! The New Year is the perfect time to talk to our kids about the beauty of starting over and trying again. Let’s face it, none of us are perfect. We all need a second chance to make a better choice, and kids need that too!
At Bloom, we have a mantra from our Social Emotional curriculum that goes like this:
Put your feet on the ground
Take a deep breath
Think about it
And restart!
Here's a video reference of how this part of the song goes!
Supporting Kids Through Messy Moments
Life is going to get messy sometimes. So, what can we do to best support ourselves and our kids when it does? This New Year, consider setting up a cozy corner with your kiddos. This space can include self-regulation tools, visuals about feelings like the zones of regulation, and other items that help them feel calm and safe.
You might also practice different breathing techniques together. These techniques can be invaluable when they feel frustrated or overwhelmed. Movement is another fantastic way to help kids regulate their bodies. Whether it’s through yoga, dancing (especially freeze dance!), or playing “the floor is lava,” movement not only helps our bodies regulate but also supports skills like impulse control, following directions, and other executive functioning skills!

The Power of Music in Emotional Development
There are many wonderful early childhood songs that can support social-emotional skills and build resilience during those tough moments. Music has a unique way of connecting with our emotions, and it can be a powerful tool for kids. Here are some great breathing and affirmation songs for kids:
“Breathe in, Breathe out” by Miss Juliann
“Gentle Wave” by Stephanie Leavell
“I Can Do Hard Things” by Narwhals and Waterfalls
“I am Enough” by SaulPaul
“Promise to Love Myself" by Gracie’s Corner!
Embracing Imperfection
There’s no way to make the hard times or mistakes go away. After all, we agreed that nobody’s perfect (see what I did there?). However, kids will do better when they believe in themselves and feel good about who they are.
As we kick off the New Year, I can’t think of a better resolution than helping our kids love themselves a little bit more. Let’s embrace the journey of making mistakes together. After all, every mistake is just a stepping stone on the path to growth.
So, how will you support your child in embracing their imperfections this year? Let’s make it a year of love, learning, and laughter!
